The 2026 entry-system cheat sheet

The single biggest source of ruined trips right now is the wave of new electronic entry systems. Here's what changed, in plain language. We handle all of this paperwork as part of your plan.

πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ί EU Entry/Exit System (EES) - live

Fully operational at all external Schengen borders since 10 April 2026. Non-EU visitors are registered biometrically (face + fingerprints) instead of passport stamps, at the first Schengen border crossed. No pre-travel action needed, but first-time registration adds queue time, so build buffers into tight connections.

πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ί ETIAS (Schengen pre-authorisation) - coming

The EU's ESTA-equivalent for visa-exempt nationals, expected in the last quarter of 2026: €20, valid 3 years, with a six-month grace period after launch. Not needed by visa-required nationals (Ugandan passports apply for Schengen visas instead). Beware fraudulent "ETIAS" websites: none can legitimately sell it before launch.

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ UK ETA - live and enforced

Mandatory since 25 February 2026 for all ~85 visa-exempt nationalities (US, EU, Canada, Australia and more): Β£20, valid 2 years, linked to your passport, applied via app and usually approved in minutes. Airlines deny boarding without it. Ugandan passports are visa-required and need the Standard Visitor Visa instead, a document-heavy application we manage as a service.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ US ESTA / B1-B2

Visa Waiver Program nationals need ESTA (fee now about $40). Ugandan passports need a full B1/B2 interview at the Kampala embassy: long waits and high refusal risk without strong ties evidence - interview prep is one of our premium services. Bonus: a valid US visa unlocks visa-free entry to Mexico and several Central American and Caribbean states.

πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ Canada eTA / TRV

Visa-exempt air travellers need the CAD$7 eTA. Ugandan passports need a Temporary Resident Visa with biometrics at VFS Kampala.

🌏 Digital arrival cards - the Asia-Pacific wave

Thailand (TDAC), Malaysia (MDAC), Singapore (SG Arrival Card), Indonesia (e-CD), Maldives (IMUGA), New Zealand (NZeTA + levy), South Korea (K-ETA for many), Sri Lanka (ETA) and Cambodia (e-arrival) each require an online form before landing. We file these for you so you never learn about them in a check-in queue.

🌍 East Africa's own systems

Uganda e-visa ($50, apply ahead); Kenya eTA; Tanzania e-visa plus Zanzibar's mandatory $44 ZIC insurance; Rwanda visa-on-arrival free for AU/Commonwealth/Francophonie passports. The $100 East Africa Tourist Visa covers Uganda + Kenya + Rwanda (not Tanzania). Yellow fever certificates are demanded across much of Africa, Asia and Latin America from travellers departing Uganda - we keep the yellow card on every checklist.
